I wonder if Plex's plan is to get bought by Verizon. ![]() The web went from "advertising supported" to "attention economy" to the "harassment economy" headlined by Taboola and Outbrain - the rot is so pervasive that it's infected products that you pay for. In that space you are competing with companies like Disney and Netflix that have tremendous assets and ability to execute as well as tomorrow's dinosaurs that today can lose more money in an afternoon than an African country spends in a year and never fire the CEO. They went from being a market leader in the media server space to the trailing edge of the streaming space which shocks me. If they weren't so busy with Crackle integration they might fix the problems that cause movies to hang up for 5 minutes if I seek them. Why would I care to serve video to people outside my home? (Sure I turn it off but it is a lot of headspace for the developers and a lot of annoying self-congradulatory literature I get subject to) For instance, I use Plex because I am behind a slow DSL connection. ![]() Plex has long been tone deaf to user's needs. Numerous things are ironic about this, but one of them is that the SSDP discovery of the Plex server is highly unreliable and "movie night" often involves rebooting the media player and the server several times. This weekend I am taking down my Plex server even if I don't have jellyfin running at 100%. ![]()
